Taiwan-China: What Is It?

Background: What is going on in Taiwan?

The day a US Navy vessel arrives in Kaohsiung is the day that our People’s Liberation Army unifies Taiwan with military force

— Xi Jinping, President of the Peoples Republic of China and Leader of the Communist Party of China

As a leader who is bent on raising China’s global stature to a level that rivals the nation’s glory years in Han and Tang times, Xi Jinping would surely not tolerate an indefinite split between Taiwan and the mainland. Illustration: Craig Stephens

Deterrence: The action of discouraging an action or event through instilling doubt or fear of the consequences

Since the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, The United States has instilled fear of the hearts of the Chinese Government in the threat of US diplomacy and nuclear weapons. As they saw the US use nuclear weapons on there neighbors in 1945, It has created a partisan gap in the ideologies of Taiwan and China. The Mao controlled Communist China let there power slip and created the One China Policy, Under the “One Country, Two Systems” policy the State of Taiwan and Hong Kong would be recognized as Chinese property but allow Taiwan to become its own political system… Only If they agreed with the system.

As China, being one of the last remaining Communist Governments, They are known for not being the fairest for some of the countries under the ‘One China Policy’.

In Hong Kong, China has done everything they can to stomp out protesters of the Chinese Regime, similarly to the Tienanmen Square case.

Whats going on now?

Now, Taiwan Arms Sales have put a block in US-China Relations and have made it almost impossible to get things done between China and the United States. As a looming threat of Beijing invasion, these arms sales have been the only deterrence to the threat of Beijing. Beijing has been openly against Taiwan and has said that they are willing to invade in 2020. Taiwan doesn’t have another friend and everyone is too scared of China to sell to Taiwan.

What should the United States do?

Personally, I believe we should continue arms sales because of the economic value and the democracy we need to preserve in the region; But, to be able to keep China happy and being able to help work on climate change with them.
